J. Shea Owens

J. Shea Owens is a Utah family law attorney with extensive courtroom experience and a unique perspective shaped by his service as a Justice Court Judge. In addition to practicing family law, Mr. Owens serves one day per week as a Justice Court Judge in Kane County, giving him rare insight into courtroom procedure, judicial decision-making, and effective advocacy.

Mr. Owens focuses his family law practice on divorce, child custody, parent-time, and related family law matters. He represents clients in both contested and uncontested divorces and is particularly skilled in handling cases that require clear strategy, strong courtroom presence, and thoughtful problem-solving. His background in litigation allows him to confidently advocate for clients whether a case is resolved through negotiation or requires court intervention.

Clients working with Mr. Owens benefit from his calm, analytical approach and his ability to explain complex legal issues in a clear and practical way. Many clients come to him feeling overwhelmed by the uncertainty of divorce or custody disputes. Mr. Owens is known for helping clients understand their options, set realistic expectations, and move forward with confidence while protecting what matters most to them and their families.

In addition to his family law practice, Mr. Owens was appointed to the Kane County Justice Court in July 2025. His judicial service enhances his ability to evaluate cases from both an advocate’s and a judge’s perspective, strengthening his strategic approach to family law matters. This experience provides valuable insight into how courts analyze evidence, apply the law, and assess credibility.

Before joining RCG Law Group, Mr. Owens served as legal counsel for the State of Utah’s Public Lands Policy Coordinating Office, where he represented the state in complex litigation involving administrative law, environmental law, and natural resources. He previously practiced in the litigation section at Parsons Behle & Latimer, handling a wide range of civil matters. Earlier in his career, he worked as a criminal defense attorney in Spokane, Washington, where he developed substantial trial and courtroom experience that now directly benefits his family law clients.

Mr. Owens earned his Juris Doctor, cum laude, from Gonzaga University School of Law and his Bachelor of Arts from Southern Virginia University. In 2024, he was recognized as Attorney of the Year for his outstanding legal advocacy and commitment to public service.
